Design and Technology

Statement of Intent

DT is an inspiring and practical subject. It encourages children to learn to think creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team.

At Smithy Bridge, we intend to encourage children to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that can solve problems in a range of real world contexts.

We aim to get children thinking about their own and other’s needs.

We also aim to link, wherever appropriate, our DT to other subjects such as maths, science, computing and art.

Pupils at Smithy Bridge will also be given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate their designs, as well as past and present examples of DT, to consider their uses and effectiveness.

We intend to encourage our pupils to become innovators and risk takers.

Implementation

Through planned activities, we teach the knowledge and skills needed for designing and making. When doing this, pupils are taught to design, make, evaluate and develop/apply technical knowledge.

Designing: Pupils will use research to develop ideas; communicated through discussion, sketches and diagrams (sometimes computer generated).

Making: Pupils will select appropriate tools and equipment to do practical tasks. This would involve cutting, shaping, joining and finishing carefully.

Select from a range of materials, textiles and ingredients according to their properties and qualities.

Evaluating: Pupils will investigate and analyse existing products.

Evaluate their own ideas against design criteria and consider the views of others in how to make improvements

Technical application: Pupils will develop their understanding of how to strengthen structures.

Understand and use mechanical systems in their designs.

Impact

Pupils can develop creative, technical and practical skills needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to take their place in an increasingly technical world

Pupils can understand and apply principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

Pupils can learn how to take risks, become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.

Through evaluation of design and technology, develop and understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.
