Maths - Instant Recall Facts

To develop your child’s fluency and mental maths skills, we have decided to introduce Key Instant Recall Facts throughout school.  These are part of a whole-school program for raising standards in Maths and a way of helping your child to have instant recall of the necessary key facts and information.

Key Instant Recall Facts are designed to support the development of mental maths skills that underpin much of the maths work in school. They are particularly useful when calculating: adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing. They contain number facts, such as number bonds and times tables, that need constant practice and rehearsal, in order for children to recall them quickly and accurately.  Instant recall of facts helps enormously with mental agility within maths lessons. When children move onto written calculations, knowing these key facts is crucial.

Each year group is allocated six facts to focus on throughout the year which are in line with age-related expectations.  The overview of these facts is on our website under the Parent section alongside parent help sheets for each year group which contain practical ideas and helpful suggestions of ways in which you could make this learning interesting and relevant.

For your child to become more efficient in recalling them easily, these facts need to be practised frequently and for short periods of time.  They are not designed to be a time-consuming task and can be practised anywhere – in the car, walking to school, etc. Regular practice - little and often – helps children to retain these facts and keep their skills sharp.

Throughout the half term, these Key Instant Recall Facts will also be practised in school and your child’s teacher will assess whether they have been retained. We know that, by internalising these key facts, which have been carefully structured to build upon each other term by term, year by year, children will leave Smithy Bridge with a much stronger foundation of mathematical understanding which they can build upon and apply what they have learned to a wide range of problems.

We hope that you will enjoy working alongside your children with this mathematics work. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
