Statement of Intent
At Smithy Bridge Primary School, we believe that the teaching of English is at the heart of children’s learning and unlocks access to the wider curriculum.
It is our intention, when teaching the English Curriculum, that our children acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding to become lifelong learners and linguists. We provide rich, varied and stimulating opportunities so that all pupils become confident, independent learners who are engaged, enthusiastic and passionate.
We will immerse children in the wonders of quality texts, to inspire an appreciation of the rich and diverse English language and develop a lifelong love of reading. We want every child to explore the wonderful world of books, and the many amazing places they can take your imagination. We continually challenge children through exposing them to a wide range of genres and texts. Our aim is to produce fluent and confident readers, therefore giving children the reading skills they need to reach their maximum potential in learning and life.
We will expose children to a wide range of writing genres, enabling them to write for a range of purposes whilst enjoying this process. We nurture a culture where children take pride in their writing, can write with clarity and accuracy and can adapt their language and style for a range of contexts. We aim to lay the foundations for lifelong writers.
By the end of their primary school journey, our children will have the ability to speak, read and write with great fluency, mastering the mechanics of reading and writing, so that they are able to communicate their ideas and emotions effectively and confidently for a range of purposes.
We believe that a secure basis in literacy skills is crucial to a high quality education and will give our children the tools that they need to take full advantage of the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
